The state has some of the lowest recycling rates in the country, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

According to a report from a state agency, Milwaukee had a rate of just 3.6 percent of its recyclable materials being recycled last year, compared to a rate in Detroit of 12.1 percent and Los Angeles of 14.7 percent.

The state is trying to reduce the problem by encouraging recycling by truck, with a pilot program in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and Dane County that aims to encourage the trucking industry to increase the amount of recycled materials they deliver.

The agency says it is working on ways to increase trucker participation in recycling.
