In 2017, residents and businesses in Baltimore, a city of nearly one million, reported a massive uptick in the use of styrocell foam, which is used to make cardboard, in their waste stream.
Residents reported that it’s been hard to find cardboard recycling bins on the street and that they are finding cardboard recycling cans in dumpsters or in the trash can on the side of the road.
Residents and businesses have been using styrofuels in the waste stream for years.
It is the cheapest way to recycle plastic.
Residents also have reported that styro-foam cans are not recycled in a safe manner.
In 2018, the city of Baltimore reported an increase in the number of plastic containers being tossed overboard by residents and the use and recycling of plastic in their landfill.
In June 2018, Baltimore Harbor officials reported that nearly 5,500 containers were tossed overboard in the Baltimore area, which was up by 25 percent from the same time last year.
The increase came after the city began issuing a voluntary plastic waste policy that required residents to throw away up to two tons of plastic every month.
In addition to the styro, cardboard and paper items, residents also report that they have seen plastic packaging in their trash cans.
The City of Baltimore said it is working to reduce the plastic waste in the city’s waterways by using plastic bags, plastic pallets and plastic bags to wrap and transport items.
Officials have also said that the city is considering building a plastic recycling facility in the area to help people who don’t recycle and reduce the amount of plastic litter in the waterways.

It’s not just the plastic that you should wear.
The water is slippery and if you’re swimming in it, you can get plastic on your skin.
Some people use disposable gloves, but they can get contaminated.
Wear long sleeves, pants, long-sleeved shirts and pants with at least a little zip.
Wearing a face mask will help protect you from getting plastic on the inside of your nose.
Wear an eye protection that doesn’t interfere with the filter, like a long-waisted hat with a face shield.
Keep a washcloth handy to help keep the plastic from entering your washable areas.
Washing dishes can also be an effective way to keep plastic out.
Make sure your dishwasher has the proper filters.
Some wash machines use a filter, which can be found in a small bowl that you can use to wash dishes.
A small bowl, usually a plastic container, is placed inside the wash machine and then it’s filtered.
Make the filter smaller.
